Account Termination
When a bank closes your account for good and ends the banking relationship, not just pauses it.

What is account termination?
Account termination is when a bank permanently closes your account and ends the relationship. It is not a pause and not a partial limit. Once terminated, the account number stops working and you can no longer use it.
A bank can terminate an account for reasons set out in its terms, including risk or compliance concerns. Of the common account actions, termination is the most serious, because it is meant to be final.
How is it different from a hold or a restriction?
These three are easily confused:
- A compliance hold is a temporary pause while the bank reviews activity.
- A restriction keeps the account open but blocks features such as outgoing transfers.
- A termination closes the account entirely.
Termination comes after a review, sometimes after a hold or restriction. It can also run alongside a criminal matter. For example, an account may first be frozen under an order of the Public Prosecutor [f3], and then closed separately once the bank makes its own decision.
What can you do if it happens?
Ask the bank in writing for the reason and for how any balance will be handled. In an ordinary closure the balance is returned to you, but money tied to a freeze may be held.
If you are unhappy with the decision or the explanation, complain through BNMLINK on 1-300-88-5465 [f1]. A dispute that stays unresolved after the bank’s own complaint process can go to the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS) [f2]. If the closure links to a suspected mule case, a lawyer can advise on your rights and next steps.

Is account termination the same as freezing?
No. A freeze locks the money in place while an investigation runs, but the account still exists. Termination closes the account and ends your relationship with the bank. A frozen account is not closed automatically, and the two decisions can come at different times.
What happens to my money if the account is closed?
In an ordinary closure, the balance is normally returned to you by cheque or by transfer to another account. If the money is under a freeze or an investigation, it may be held instead. Ask the bank in writing how it will handle the balance, and keep the reply.
Can I challenge a termination?
Complain to the bank first, in writing, and ask for the reason. If you are not satisfied, escalate through BNMLINK. Disputes still unresolved can go to the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS). If a criminal investigation is involved, a lawyer can advise on your rights.
