Why Grab drivers get flagged

Banks use automated systems to spot suspicious transaction patterns. [f1] They look for frequent small deposits from many sources, money moving in and out quickly, and high volumes compared with declared income.

A full-time Grab driver’s account fits several of these. You get regular Grab payouts, cash deposits from daily fares, DuitNow transfers from passengers and maybe top-ups from several e-wallets. To the bank’s system, this can look like mule account activity.

Bank Negara Malaysia rules also require banks to look more closely at accounts with unusual transaction volumes. [f5] So your honest work can create the very pattern these systems are built to catch. That does not mean you did anything wrong, but your account does not look like a typical salary earner’s.

What happens when your account is frozen

A frozen account blocks all transactions. You cannot withdraw cash, transfer money, receive deposits or use your debit card. For a driver who lives on daily payouts, the income stops at once.

The freeze can come from two places. A bank compliance freeze comes from the bank’s own monitoring, and banks must report suspicious transactions to Bank Negara Malaysia under AMLA. [f2] A police freeze comes from an order to the bank, usually as part of a wider investigation into where money went.

You have the right to ask your bank why your account was frozen. [f4] The answer decides your next steps.

If the police froze your account as part of an investigation, a charge under section 424C of the Penal Code is possible. This section covers transactions through an account without a lawful purpose. The penalty is 3 to 10 years in prison, a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000, or both. [f3]

What you knew, and why you made each transaction, matter to your defence. A driver with records of earnings has something concrete to show, but you still need legal help to present it properly.

Evidence that proves your income

Your Grab driver account holds most of the evidence you need. The platform records every trip, fare and payout, which links the deposits in your bank account to real work.

Grab Driver app records. Download your trip history, earnings statements and payout records. They show when Grab paid you and how much.

Bank statements. Ask for full statements showing every deposit and withdrawal. A lawyer can match Grab payouts to specific bank entries.

Registration documents. Your Grab driver registration, vehicle ownership and insurance records show you are an active, registered e-hailing driver.

Daily records. Notes of your working hours, fuel receipts or toll payments all support the picture of a working driver whose deposits are real earnings.

What to do right now

Contact your bank. Ask why the account was frozen and whether the bank or the police ordered it. Write down the date, the name of the person you spoke to and what they said.

Download your Grab data. Get your full trip history and earnings reports from the Grab Driver app now, as it may be harder to get later. It is the core of your evidence preparation.

Do not deposit cash into the frozen account. Money paid into a frozen account may be held, or seen as more suspicious activity.

Talk to a lawyer. A lawyer who handles frozen account cases can deal with the bank or police for you and show your Grab earnings as proof of real income. They can then work towards lifting the freeze.

Keeping your income going

You still need to earn while the account is frozen. Ask Grab about sending your payouts to a different bank account in your own name, if you already have one. You may need to show papers explaining the change. Ask your lawyer before you open a new account.

The freeze is a setback, but it does not have to stop you working.

Why would a Grab driver's account get flagged?

Banks watch transaction patterns with automated systems. A Grab driver receives frequent Grab payouts, cash deposits and DuitNow transfers. That many small deposits from different sources can look like the pattern of a mule account, meaning an account used to move scam money.

Can I still drive Grab while my account is frozen?

You can still take rides, but you need a working bank account to receive Grab payouts. You may have to change your Grab payout details to another account. A lawyer can also ask for part of the frozen money to be released for living costs.

How do I prove my deposits are from Grab driving?

Download your full trip history and earnings reports from the Grab Driver app. Match each deposit to specific trips and payouts. Together with your driver registration and daily earnings summaries, this is strong evidence that the money is real income.

How long will my account stay frozen?

It depends on who froze it. An AMLA Section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. A police freeze under CPC section 116D lapses after 18 months if no charge is brought. Before then, you can apply to the Sessions Court to vary or cancel it. A bank's own compliance freeze may be lifted once you show proper proof of where your income comes from.

Should I open a new bank account?

Ask a lawyer first. Some banks may refuse if your name appears in their compliance records, and moving money to get around a freeze can cause further trouble. A lawyer can advise you and, if needed, speak to the bank for you.

Can I be charged with a crime just because my account was flagged?

Being flagged does not mean you will be charged. Banks freeze accounts as a precaution while they check. If your normal earnings pattern set off the freeze, sending proper records through a lawyer can help sort it out.
