Multiple Jobs, Multiple Accounts Frozen?
Working several gig jobs does not make you a criminal, but your accounts may look suspicious.

Why do gig workers get flagged?
If you drive for Grab, deliver food, sell on Shopee and freelance on the side, your banking looks very different from a salaried worker’s. Money comes in from several platforms at odd times, and you may move it between accounts to cover costs. [f2]
Banks must report unusual patterns to Bank Negara Malaysia. [f1] When their systems see frequent deposits from many sources across several accounts, it can look like a mule account. The system does not know you are a gig worker; it only sees the numbers.
So honest work can set off the same alarms that catch real criminals. Knowing why it happened helps you answer it.
Is a frozen account the same as a charge?
No. A frozen account does not mean you have been charged with a crime. It matters whether it is the bank’s own hold or a freeze ordered by the police.
A bank hold starts when the bank’s own system flags your account for review. [f5] The bank wants to check where the money came from before allowing more transactions. Showing the right papers may clear it.
A police freeze is more serious: your account is part of an investigation. You have the right to know which authority ordered the freeze and under which law. [f4] Either way, a lawyer can help you respond the right way.
What does the law actually say?
The worry for gig workers is the Penal Code’s mule account offences, which target accounts used for unlawful activity. [f3] These include Section 424C, the offence of using your own account for transactions without a lawful purpose. They carry prison terms and fines.
The key word is “unlawful.” If your accounts only received your own gig income, there was no unlawful activity. The task is to prove that clearly and quickly, before things escalate.
A lawyer who handles mule account cases knows what evidence to gather and how to present it to the bank or the investigating officer.
How do you prove your income is genuine?
Organised records are the most useful thing a gig worker can show. These matter most.
Platform payment records. Every platform you use, such as Grab, Shopee, Foodpanda or Lazada, keeps payment records, so download your earnings statements for the period in question. They match the deposits in your bank account directly.
Tax records and invoices. If you file tax or invoice freelance clients, these link your income to declared work. Even informal records help show a steady pattern of real work.
Contracts and agreements. Any agreements, offer letters or contracts with clients or platforms show the money came from real work.
A clear timeline. A timeline matching each deposit to the platform or client that paid it makes your case easy to follow. Your lawyer can use it to show where every ringgit came from.
What should you do right now?
If your accounts are frozen and you work several gig jobs, take these steps now.
Find out who ordered the freeze. Ask your bank whether it is a bank hold or a police order, and ask for the reference number and the law used. [f4] That decides your next steps.
Download your platform records. Log in to every platform you earn from and save your payment history. Do it now, as some platforms keep records only for a limited time.
Do not close or move accounts. Opening new accounts or moving the remaining money can look like you are hiding something. Leave everything as it is and let your lawyer handle it.
Speak to a lawyer. A lawyer who deals with account freezes can talk to the bank or police for you, present your records and push for the freeze to be lifted.
How can a lawyer help?
A lawyer can help in three ways that are hard to manage alone.
First, they turn your income records into a formal source-of-funds file that banks and investigators recognise. It links every transaction to its lawful source, rather than just handing over statements.
Second, they deal directly with the investigating officer or the bank’s compliance team. A lawyer’s letter may carry more weight than phone calls from you.
Third, they help you avoid mistakes. Anything you tell the bank or police goes on the record, and a lawyer can check it before you say it. Getting legal help early keeps your options open.
What rights do you have?
Even with frozen accounts, you can ask for information about the freeze and have a lawyer act for you. In some cases you can also ask for part of the money to be released for essential costs.
A freeze is not a verdict. Clear records and legal help give you the best chance to show that your income is genuine.

Why were all my accounts frozen when I work legitimate jobs?
Banks use automated systems that flag unusual patterns. Several accounts getting frequent, irregular deposits from many sources can look like mule accounts. Until someone reviews it, the system cannot tell gig pay from suspicious transfers.
Can I prove my income is from gig work?
Yes. Payment records from Grab, Shopee, Foodpanda and similar platforms link your work to your income. A lawyer can put them into a source-of-funds file showing where every deposit came from.
Do I need a lawyer or can I explain this to the bank myself?
You can explain it yourself, but a lawyer's letter backed by organised evidence may carry more weight. A lawyer can also help you avoid saying something that weakens your position.
How long will my accounts stay frozen?
It depends on whether it is the bank's own hold or a police order. A bank hold may be lifted once you show proper papers. A police freeze can take longer, and a lawyer can write to the investigating officer for you.
Will this affect my ability to open new bank accounts?
A freeze does not automatically stop you opening an account at another bank. If it is linked to a police report, though, other banks may be cautious. A lawyer can advise on your options while the investigation is open. Do not use a new account to move money that is frozen.
What if I transferred money between my own accounts?
Moving money between your own accounts is legal, but frequent transfers across several accounts can set off automated flags. Your lawyer can help show these were routine moves of your own earnings. Keep a note of why you made each transfer.
