Frozen Account? Keep Your Insurance Active
Your policies stay valid while premiums are paid, so switch how you pay before auto-debit fails.

Does a frozen account cancel your insurance?
No. A frozen bank account does not cancel your insurance policies. [f1] Your life insurance, medical card and motor insurance all stay valid as long as premiums are paid. The freeze affects how you pay, not the policy.
The problem starts when your premiums are auto-debited from the frozen account. The bank cannot process the debit, so the payment fails. A failed payment is not the same as a cancellation.
Insurers must give you a grace period before any policy lapses. [f2] That gives you time to pay another way, as long as you act before it ends.
The 30-day grace period
Under LIAM guidelines, life insurers must give a 30-day grace period after a missed premium. [f2] During that time your policy stays fully active. You can still claim, and your beneficiaries are still protected.
The grace period is counted from the date the premium was due, so check your policy papers for the exact date. Contact your insurer as soon as you know your account is frozen, without waiting for a notice.
Medical, takaful and motor policies may have different grace periods. Check your policy papers or call the insurer.
What happens when the auto-debit fails
When the bank tries an auto-debit on a frozen account, the transaction is rejected. [f3] The insurer sees a failed payment.
Before a policy lapses, the insurer must send a notice with a final date to pay. [f3]
A notice sent by post can take days. So call your insurer before the notice reaches you. Explain that you need to change your payment method, and pay the premium another way.
Other ways to pay
You can keep paying premiums without the frozen account. [f4] The options include:
- cash at the insurer’s branch counter
- a cheque made out to the insurer
- an online transfer from another bank account that is not frozen
If you have no other way to pay, tell your insurer and ask what it can arrange. Keep every receipt. Receipts show you paid on time, which helps if there is ever a dispute.
Protecting your life insurance
Life insurance can be your family’s main safety net. If your account is frozen, make this cover a priority. Contact your life insurer within days of the freeze, not weeks.
Ask to change from auto-debit to manual payment, and ask for written confirmation that the policy is still active. If you have already missed a payment, pay it within the grace period and ask for confirmation that the policy did not lapse.
If your policy has a cash value, do not surrender it for quick cash. Surrendering a policy cannot be undone. A lawyer experienced in frozen account cases can advise on applications to release money for essential payments, to the enforcement agency for an AMLA freeze or to the Sessions Court for a police freeze.
Motor insurance and road tax
Your motor insurance must stay active for your vehicle to be on the road legally. If it lapses because of a failed auto-debit, you risk driving uninsured, which is an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987.
Contact your motor insurer as soon as your account is frozen. Switch to manual payment and pay before the renewal date. If the policy has already lapsed, get it reinstated before you drive.
You cannot renew road tax without active motor insurance. A lapsed policy therefore blocks your road tax too. Changing how you pay early can prevent all of this.
Medical card and hospital cover
Your medical card is active as long as premiums are paid up. A failed auto-debit does not cancel your cover at once, but the grace period starts counting down. If you have a medical emergency during the grace period, ask your insurer how the claim will be handled.
After the grace period, a lapsed medical policy may need underwriting again before it is reinstated. That can mean new medical checks, waiting periods for existing conditions, and possibly higher premiums based on your health now.
Preventing a lapse is easier than reinstating a policy. Contact your insurer, pay another way, and keep your medical cover in place throughout the freeze.
Do you need to tell your insurer about the freeze?
For existing policies, you do not need to tell your insurer your account is frozen. [f5] You only need to change how you pay. The freeze is a banking matter and does not by itself change the terms of your cover.
Applying for new insurance while frozen is different. The insurer may ask about your finances, and you must answer honestly. A frozen account linked to a mule account investigation does not automatically rule you out, but false or incomplete answers on an application can affect your cover.
If you need new cover, your lawyer can advise on what to disclose and how to explain your situation. Meanwhile, keep your existing policies active while the freeze is resolved.
Getting help from your insurance agent
If you have an insurance agent you trust, tell them you need to change your payment method. They can help you deal with the insurer.
You do not have to give the agent the reason for the change. Saying you need to change how you pay is enough. An agent can explain the steps.
If your agent does not respond, call the insurer’s customer service directly. If an insurer refuses another payment method for an existing policy, you can complain to BNM.

Will my life insurance policy be cancelled if my account is frozen?
Not straight away. Your life insurance stays valid as long as premiums are paid. If the auto-debit fails, the insurer must give you a 30-day grace period before the policy lapses. Use that time to pay another way.
What happens to my medical card if auto-debit fails?
Check your policy for the grace period on your medical card. Contact your insurer at once to pay manually, for example by cash, cheque or an online transfer from another account. Do not wait until the grace period runs out.
Can I still claim on my motor insurance if my account is frozen?
Yes, as long as the policy is active and premiums are paid up. A frozen account does not affect your right to claim. If the auto-debit fails, pay the premium another way to keep the policy active.
Do I need to tell my insurer that my account is frozen?
A frozen account is not a standard disclosure item for an existing policy. You only need to change how you pay. If you apply for a new policy, the insurer may ask about your finances as part of its checks.
How do I switch from auto-debit to manual payment?
Call your insurer or visit a branch and ask to change from auto-debit to manual payment. You can then pay by cash, cheque or online transfer from another account. Keep the receipts as proof of payment.
Will my premiums increase because of the frozen account?
A freeze does not by itself change your premium. Premiums are set by your policy terms, age, health and claims history.
