Mule Account Lawyer in Johor
Your account in Johor has been treated as a mule account: here are the steps, in order.
Sources checked 2026-09-17 to 2026-10-05
If your account is being treated as a mule account anywhere in Johor, take these steps in order. The law on mule accounts is federal, so it is the same across the state.
Step 1: stop helping the scheme
Cut contact with the person who asked for your account, card or online banking login, and refuse any further request. Do not move money, empty the account or “help clear” anything they ask about.
Anything you do on their instruction can later look like you were part of it.
Step 2: write down the timeline
List, with dates, how your account came to be used. Save the job offer or advert that started it, the full chat, transfer records and every bank notice.
A clear timeline is what a lawyer needs first. It can also help show a Johor investigator how you came to take part.
Step 3: find out what froze your account
Different laws freeze accounts in different ways. Under AMLA, the Public Prosecutor can order a bank not to release money suspected to come from crime, and that order lapses after 18 months if no one is charged [f2].
A lawyer can check which power was used and where its timeline stands.
Step 4: understand the section 424C risk
The heaviest mule charge is section 424C, for transactions through an account without a lawful purpose. It carries 3 to 10 years in jail or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000 [f1].
Whether it fits you depends on what your account was used for. Lighter sections cover holding someone else’s account or handing over your own.
Step 5: ask for living-expense money early
If you cannot pay for daily needs, ask about it early. For a freeze under AMLA section 44, section 44A lets you apply to vary it so money is released for reasonable living or business expenses [f3]. You apply in writing to the enforcement agency that froze the account under section 44, and a more senior officer decides.
The request is not automatic, so a lawyer can help you show the need.
Step 6: deal with Johor police and courts through a lawyer
If police call you in, the contact is likely an officer at the Johor Police Contingent (IPK) on Jalan Tebrau in Johor Bahru or at a district headquarters (IPD) such as Muar or Kluang [f7]. Note the station, the officer and the date, and speak to a lawyer before giving a statement.
If the case is charged, the High Court has seats at Johor Bahru and Muar [f6]. Mule offences are tried in the Magistrates’ Court or Sessions Court, and the prosecution decides which.
The Legal Aid Department lists offices in Johor and Muar [f8]. The Malaysian Bar runs legal aid centres in the Ibrahim International Business District and in Muar [f9]. For bank complaints, BNMLINK is at 1-300-88-5465 [f4].

Take care with cross-border money
If your Johor account received money from abroad, such as Singapore, foreign transfers can draw extra attention in a mule investigation. Do not explain them away casually, and do not move money around to tidy the record.
Leave the account as it is. List every foreign transfer with the date and the other party, and give that list to your lawyer, because records are far stronger than a late tidy-up that can look like hiding something.

How long can my account stay frozen under AMLA in Johor?
An AMLA order made by the Public Prosecutor lapses after 18 months if you have not been charged by then. A police freeze under CPC section 116D lapses after 18 months if no prosecution is started. A lawyer can check which power was used on your account and where its timeline stands.
Can I release some money for living costs while frozen?
Possibly, if it is a freeze under AMLA section 44. Section 44A lets you apply in writing to the agency that froze the account, and a more senior officer decides. You must show a real need for reasonable living or business expenses, and a lawyer can prepare the application.
Where in Johor would the police ask me to give a statement?
Statements are taken by officers of the Johor police, whose contingent headquarters (IPK) is on Jalan Tebrau in Johor Bahru, or at a district headquarters (IPD) such as Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang or Segamat. The call-in letter or the officer names the station. Write it down with the date and the officer, and speak to a lawyer before you go. [f7]
Where can I get legal aid in Johor for a mule case?
The Legal Aid Department lists offices in Johor and in Muar, and the Malaysian Bar runs legal aid centres at the Ibrahim International Business District and in Muar. Each sets its own criteria, so ask whether you qualify. If the case reaches the High Court, it sits at Johor Bahru or Muar. [f8]
Where do I complain about how the bank handled things?
BNMLINK, Bank Negara Malaysia's complaints channel at 1-300-88-5465, takes complaints about how a bank treated you. The Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS) is the next step after a complaint to the bank itself. These are separate from the criminal case.
