Police Froze All Your Bank Accounts
When every bank freezes you at once, each order can be challenged separately.

Why all your banks froze you at once
Finding every one of your bank accounts frozen is frightening. It can feel as if the whole banking system has shut you out.
Three legal routes let the authorities freeze your accounts at every bank you use. Each works differently, and the right response depends on which one applies to you.
CPC Section 116D: police powers across banks
Under the 2024 amendments, police officers of sergeant rank and above can freeze bank accounts without a court order under Section 116D of the Criminal Procedure Code. [f1] The power is not limited to one bank. An officer can send freeze instructions to every bank where you have an account.
Police can use this power when they suspect an account is linked to a crime. If your name or IC number comes up in an investigation, the freeze can reach every bank at the same time.
This is one way people find all their accounts frozen on the same day. If the police have contacted you, what you do in the first hours matters. Our guide to account freezes explains your rights.
Semak Mule: the alert system shared by banks
PDRM runs the Semak Mule platform, which shares flagged account details with all participating banks. [f2] When your identity is flagged, every bank that holds your account gets the alert.
A bank that gets a Semak Mule flag can freeze your account as part of its compliance duties. That is why freezes can appear at several banks within hours, even without a police order to each bank.
Semak Mule is meant to stop scam money moving between banks. If you are innocent and caught by it, what counts is showing that your money is legitimate. Our comparison of freeze types explains how each route differs.
AMLA Section 50: freezes ordered by the Public Prosecutor
Under Section 50 of AMLA, the Public Prosecutor can order a freeze on every account in a suspect’s name. [f3] This comes from the prosecution, as part of a formal investigation into money laundering, terrorism financing or proceeds of crime.
One AMLA s50 order can name every bank where you have an account. It is wide on purpose, because the investigation is tracing money across the whole banking system.
Under AMLA Section 52A, these orders lapse if no one is charged within 18 months. [f3]
Each freeze is a separate order
Even if every account was frozen on the same day for the same investigation, each bank holds a separate freeze order. [f4] So each order can be challenged or varied on its own.
A lawyer can look at the orders at all your banks and pick the account with the strongest case for early release. Focusing on that account first may be quicker than trying to lift every freeze at once.
A lawyer who has handled freezes across several banks may know which authority to approach first. See finding legal help.
Asking for money to be released from each account
For a freeze by an enforcement agency under AMLA Section 44, Section 44A lets you apply in writing to that agency to vary it so money is released for essential living costs. [f5] When several accounts are frozen, you can make an application for each one.
The application goes to the authority that issued the freeze. For an AMLA Section 44 order, it goes to the enforcement agency that issued it, and a more senior officer decides. A police freeze under CPC 116D is varied by a Sessions Court.
A lawyer can prepare these applications side by side. The aim is to get money for rent, food, utilities and other essentials while the investigation continues.
What to do when every account is frozen
Contact each bank. Ask who issued the freeze and get the reference number for each one. Write down the date, the officer’s name and what you were told, because each bank may have had its order from a different source.
Do not open new accounts. Opening a new bank account while you are under investigation can look like you are getting around the freeze. That can cause more legal trouble.
Gather documents for every account. Collect 12 months of statements from each frozen bank, plus documents that show where the money in each account came from and what it was for.
Contact a lawyer who handles multi-bank freezes. Freezes at several banks at once need one joined-up plan. A qualified lawyer can work out the quickest way to get access back.
How long multi-bank freezes last
It depends on who issued the orders. An AMLA Section 44 freeze lapses after 90 days unless you are charged. [f5] An AMLA Section 50 order lapses after 18 months without a charge. [f3] A police freeze under CPC 116D lapses after 18 months without a prosecution, and the Sessions Court can vary it before then. [f1]
Clear proof of where your money came from is one of the most useful things you can give when you ask for a freeze to be varied.
Some accounts may be released before others. If the investigation finds that certain accounts have nothing to do with the suspected activity, those freezes can be lifted while the rest of the investigation continues.

Can the police freeze all my bank accounts at the same time?
Yes. Under CPC Section 116D, police officers of sergeant rank and above can send freeze orders to every bank where you have an account. They do not need a court order, and all the freezes can happen at once.
Why did every bank freeze my account on the same day?
The Semak Mule system links your identity across banks. Once your name or IC number is flagged, every participating bank gets the alert and can freeze your accounts, sometimes within hours. The police can also send separate orders to each bank at the same time.
Is each bank freeze a separate order?
Yes. Even if every account was frozen on the same day, each bank holds its own freeze order. That matters because each one can be challenged or varied on its own. A lawyer can decide which account to work on first.
Can I get at least one account unfrozen for living costs?
For a freeze by an enforcement agency under AMLA Section 44, you can apply in writing to that agency under Section 44A to vary it so money is released from one or more accounts for essentials such as food, rent and utilities. A separate application is made for each account you want varied.
How long will all my accounts stay frozen?
It depends on who issued the freeze. An AMLA Section 44 freeze lapses after 90 days unless you are charged [f5]. An AMLA Section 50 order lapses after 18 months without a charge [f3]. A police freeze under CPC Section 116D lapses after 18 months without a prosecution [f1], and you can apply to the Sessions Court to vary it earlier.
Does a freeze on all my banks mean I will be charged?
No. A freeze is a step in the investigation, not a finding of guilt. Some freezes are lifted without a charge after the account holder shows where the money came from. A wide freeze reflects a wide investigation, not a conclusion.
