Personal Account Frozen Over Business Transactions?
Your personal account was frozen because business transactions triggered compliance flags.

Why do personal accounts get flagged for business use?
When you opened your personal account, you told the bank it was for personal use. Your profile lists your job, expected monthly income and the kind of transactions you would make. The bank’s compliance system checks your account against that profile.
Business income changes the pattern. Many transfers from different people, regular large deposits and a high number of transactions do not fit a personal account. [f1] The bank’s automated system flags this as suspicious.
That does not mean the bank thinks you are a criminal. [f2] It means your activity does not match what you told the bank to expect. The bank has anti-money laundering duties to look into it, and it may restrict the account while it does.
Bank review or criminal freeze: which one do you have?
Knowing which kind of freeze you face changes how you respond.
A bank compliance hold is the bank’s own decision. [f4] It restricts the account while its compliance team reviews your transactions. There is no police involvement and no court order, and the bank can lift it once it is satisfied.
A police or AMLA freeze is different. It happens when the authorities ask for or order a freeze because your account appears in a criminal investigation. [f6] This needs a legal response, so speak to a lawyer before you answer any questions.
Call your bank straight away and ask who ordered the freeze and why. [f5] You have the right to ask for the reasons in writing, and the answer decides your next step.
Why do sole proprietors run into this?
Some sole proprietors use a personal account for business because it is convenient. [f3] SSM registration lets you open a business account, but a personal account is simpler to run, especially for a new or small business.
The problem grows with the business. A personal account with small, steady monthly amounts looks normal. The same account suddenly receiving much larger sums from many sources looks suspicious to the bank’s system.
Cash-heavy businesses, such as food stalls, market traders and home businesses, face extra risk. Frequent cash deposits without clear business papers can trigger the same flags.
How do you prove your income is lawful?
The answer is a clear paper trail that links every transaction in your account to real business activity.
SSM registration. Your business registration certificate shows you run a lawful sole proprietorship. If you are not registered yet, that makes it harder to show, but a lawyer can still help build your case.
Tax records. LHDN tax returns that show your business income prove you have been declaring it to the government. This can be strong evidence that the money is lawful.
Invoices and receipts. Every sale should have a matching document. Invoices, delivery orders and payment receipts form the paper trail the bank needs to see.
Customer records. A list of regular customers, their contact details and payment history explains the pattern of deposits. This matters most if many different people pay you by transfer.
Your source of funds documentation pulls all of this into one clear account the bank or the authorities can check.
What should you do right now?
Call your bank. Ask why the account is restricted, and whether it is an internal review or a freeze requested by the police or another authority. Note the date, time and name of the person you spoke to.
Gather your business papers. Collect your SSM registration, tax returns, invoices, receipts and any contracts with customers or suppliers. Showing the full picture early can help the review finish.
Do not open new accounts without advice. Opening accounts elsewhere while your account is under review can look suspicious. Get legal advice first on whether, and how, to set up other banking.
Explain your transactions. Go through your statements and note what each large transaction was for, matching deposits to invoices and receipts. The bank or the authorities will ask for exactly this, so doing it early saves time.
Speak to a lawyer. Even for a simple compliance hold, a lawyer who handles account freeze cases can deal with the bank for you and present your papers in the form the bank needs.
How do you stop it happening again?
Once the freeze is lifted, separate your business and personal banking.
Open a business account. Use your SSM registration to open a proper business account. Run all business transactions through it from now on, and keep your personal account for personal use.
Update your bank profile. If some business payments still come into your personal account during the switch, tell your bank your transaction profile has changed.
Keep proper records. Keep invoices, receipts and simple accounts for every business transaction. They protect you if questions come up later and make tax filing easier.
A freeze is stressful. Lawful business income and the right papers give your lawyer something to work with. If your account is frozen, send a short message about your business and ask to be referred to a lawyer who can tell you what the bank is likely to ask for.

Why was my personal account frozen if all my transactions are legitimate?
Banks watch accounts against the profile you gave when you opened them. A personal account was declared for personal use, so heavy business activity looks out of place. The bank flags the account first and checks afterwards, which is how honest businesses get caught.
Is this a bank compliance hold or a police freeze?
They are different and are handled differently. A compliance hold is the bank's own review. A police or AMLA freeze involves the authorities. Ask your bank who ordered the restriction, because the answer decides your next step and how urgently you need a lawyer.
Can I just open a new account at another bank?
Do not open a new account to get around the freeze. Another bank may ask about the frozen account, and a new account may be restricted too. Ask a lawyer which steps to take first in your case.
What documents do I need to prove my income is legitimate?
Gather your SSM registration certificate, tax returns filed with LHDN, invoices, delivery orders, customer receipts and bank statements that show the pattern. The aim is a clear paper trail that links every deposit to a real sale.
How long will the freeze last?
A bank compliance hold lasts as long as the bank's review takes. For a police or AMLA freeze, the time limit depends on the order and the law behind it, so ask your lawyer which one applies. Having your documents ready helps whichever review you face.
Will I face criminal charges?
Not necessarily. If your transactions really are business income, well-presented documents can help the bank or the authorities see that. A lawyer who handles account freeze cases can help you answer the bank or the authorities clearly.
