Wedding Planner Account Frozen Over Client Deposits

Why do wedding planners get flagged?
A wedding planning business takes money from many different people. Each client pays a booking deposit, then progress payments and a final balance. In peak season, your account may receive dozens of large transfers a month from people with no link to each other.
Banks must watch for exactly this pattern. [f1] When an account gets frequent large deposits from many sources, the bank’s system flags it as possibly suspicious. The system cannot tell a busy wedding planner from someone collecting money for crime.
The Malaysian wedding industry is worth RM8-10 billion a year, and most clients pay by bank transfer. [f2] On a compliance screen, your normal business can look like money laundering.
How does the freeze happen?
It can start without your knowledge. The bank’s compliance team reviews the flagged account and files a Suspicious Transaction Report (STR) with Bank Negara Malaysia. [f3] The law forbids the bank from telling you about the report.
If an enforcement agency decides to investigate, it can issue a Section 44 freeze under AMLA. [f4] This freeze can lock your account for up to 90 days. During that time you cannot withdraw, transfer or use any money in it.
The first sign can be a failed payment or ATM withdrawal. The bank will confirm the freeze when you call, but it may not be able to say which agency ordered it or why.
What does a freeze do to your business?
A frozen account in the middle of wedding season hits hard. You have vendor deposits to pay, venues to confirm and clients expecting their weddings to go ahead. Each day the freeze lasts puts your name at risk.
Your clients paid you in trust. If you cannot meet your commitments, you may face complaints, possible lawsuits and damage to your business name.
That is why speed matters. The sooner a lawyer is involved, the sooner your source-of-funds documents reach the investigating agency.
What are your rights as an account holder?
You have rights during this process. The freeze is an investigation step, not a criminal charge.
You can ask which agency ordered the freeze, and you can get legal advice. If an enforcement agency froze the account under AMLA Section 44, you can also apply in writing under Section 44A to release part of the money for essential business costs. [f5]
A lawyer who handles business account freezes can deal with the investigating agency for you. This can help, because the agency gets the documents it needs to review your account.
How do you show where your money came from?
To resolve a business banking freeze, you need to show that every deposit has a lawful source. As a wedding planner, you already have strong proof.
Client contracts and invoices. Each booking should have a signed agreement with the client’s name, event date and payment schedule. Match each deposit to a contract.
Payment receipts and messages. Transfer confirmations, receipts and messages about payments link each deposit to a real client and a real event.
Business registration. Your SSM registration, business licence and any wedding industry memberships show that you run a lawful business.
Vendor payments. Payments to caterers, decorators, venues and photographers show that client deposits went out again as real business costs.
What should you do right now?
Speak to a lawyer now. A lawyer who handles frozen business accounts can advise on your case and start the unfreeze process. Your clients’ wedding dates are fixed, so time matters.
Gather your documents. Collect all client contracts, invoices, payment records and registration documents, sorted by client and date. Your lawyer will use them for your source-of-funds submission.
Tell affected clients. Let clients with upcoming events know about a temporary banking problem. You do not need to share legal details, and your lawyer can advise on what to say.
Do not try to move money around. If you have other accounts, do not redirect client payments in ways that could look suspicious. Agree on proper banking arrangements with your lawyer.
Keep records from now on. If you do not keep detailed records yet, start now. Clear records that match each deposit to a real booking protect you in future.
How does a lawyer resolve a business freeze?
Your lawyer prepares a formal submission to the investigating agency. It includes your business registration, client contracts matched to deposits, vendor payments and a plain explanation of how your business works.
The aim is to show a documented, lawful source for every ringgit. Good records make the trail simple to show: the client books, pays a deposit, you pay vendors, the wedding happens.
If client events are close, your lawyer can also apply for partial release of funds for essential costs. That can help you keep your commitments while the investigation continues.
How can you prevent another freeze?
Once your account is unfrozen, open a dedicated business account and tell your bank what your business does. Keep records so that every deposit can be traced to a client contract.
A business account under your SSM registration tells the bank why the deposits come in. Once the bank knows you run a wedding planning business, its system can take your payment pattern into account.

Why was my wedding planning account frozen?
Banks watch for accounts that receive large deposits from many different people. A planner collecting booking fees, deposits and final payments from dozens of clients a month can create a pattern that looks suspicious. The bank can flag the account even though your business is genuine.
Can I still pay my wedding vendors while my account is frozen?
No. A frozen account blocks all outgoing payments until the freeze is lifted. If an enforcement agency froze it under AMLA Section 44, a lawyer can prepare a written application under Section 44A to release part of the money for essential business costs. Explain your fixed wedding dates in it.
How long will my account stay frozen?
A Section 44 freeze under AMLA lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. Clear records sent through a lawyer can help, but no one can promise how fast the agency will respond. The timing also depends on how fast you can show where the money came from.
What documents do I need to unfreeze my account?
Gather your wedding contracts, client invoices, booking confirmations, payment receipts and business registration. Bank statements that show deposits matching your contracts help most. A lawyer will turn these into a formal source-of-funds submission.
Will my clients find out that my account was frozen?
The bank does not tell your clients. They may notice if you cannot pay refunds or vendors on time. Telling them briefly about a temporary banking problem, without legal details, can help keep their trust, and a lawyer can advise on what to say.
Should I open a new account at another bank?
Do not open a new account to move your money around. It can look like an attempt to get around the freeze and can create new legal problems. Deal with the freeze first, and ask your lawyer about banking arrangements during the investigation.
Can I be charged with a crime for receiving client deposits?
Receiving genuine business payments is not a crime. A freeze is an investigation step, not a charge. Still, take it seriously and work with a lawyer to show that every deposit came from a real client booking.
