What the 997 hotline is for
The National Scam Response Centre runs 997 as one number to call as soon as you realise you have been scammed. It is built for speed [f1].
If you report a transfer quickly, the centre can move to freeze the receiving account before the money is taken out. That early freeze is the main thing 997 is for.
When to call
Call 997 as soon as a transfer feels wrong: a fake investment, a love scam, a parcel or loan scam, or a “police officer” on the phone asking for money. The line runs 24 hours a day, and minutes matter more than being sure.
Do not wait until you are certain, and do not message the person who took your money first. Calling while the money may still be there is the most useful thing you can do [f1].
What to have ready
Gather a few things so you can speak quickly and clearly:
- the receiving bank and account number
- the amount
- the exact date and time
- your transaction receipt and any chat with the other person
- the phone number or app they used to contact you
These details let the officer act on the right account.
What happens after the call
The 997 officer records your report and can send an urgent freeze request to the receiving bank and the police. A police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze a suspect account at once, without a court order [f2].
You may then be asked to make a formal police report at a station. Commercial fraud cases are investigated by the CCID, so keep every reference number [f4].
Checks you can do yourself
While you wait, you can check the PDRM Semak Mule portal to see whether an account or phone number is already flagged as a mule [f3].
If the account you paid is flagged, that supports your report. Write down what happened, in order, while it is fresh. Clear notes help the police and any lawyer you speak to later.
When your own account is the one frozen
There is a harder situation that 997 does not solve. Sometimes the innocent person is the one whose account received the scam money, and that account gets frozen too.
If this is you, 997 will not release your account, because that is a separate legal matter. A lawyer can explain which power froze your account and what you can apply for.
What the 997 line cannot do
997 cannot promise your money will come back. That depends on whether the money is still there and what the receiving bank finds [f1].
It does not give legal advice or act for you, and it does not lift a freeze on your own account. Treat it as the emergency step that buys time and starts the record, then deal with the legal side separately.

How fast should I call 997 after a scam transfer?
Straight away, ideally within minutes. The 997 line is meant to act while the money is still in the receiving account [f1]. Once it is withdrawn or moved on, getting it back can be harder. Call first, then gather your papers.
What details should I have ready when I call?
The receiving account number and bank, the amount, and the date and time. Keep your transaction receipt and any chat with the person who asked for the transfer. These let the officer ask for a freeze on the right account [f1].
Does calling 997 count as a formal police report?
Press reports say a 997 call is treated as a police report, but you may still be asked to make a formal report at a police station so the case is recorded for investigation [f4]. Ask the 997 officer what reference number or next step you need, and keep every number they give you.
Can 997 unfreeze my own account if I am the innocent receiver?
No. The 997 line takes scam reports and starts freezes; it does not release an account frozen against you. If your account was frozen, for example by a police order under section 116D [f2], that is a separate legal process, and a lawyer or legal aid officer can help you respond.
