Tuition Fees Flagged Your Account
Fee transfers from parents and students triggered an unusual-activity flag on your account.

Why collecting tuition fees can trigger a flag
Every month, your account receives a batch of small transfers from many parents and students. They often arrive in the same few days at the start of the month. To an automated system, that repeating pattern of different senders can look like a mule account collecting scattered payments. [f1]
Under AMLA 2001, an account suspected of holding proceeds of crime can be frozen. Police can also act fast: since the 2024 amendments, an officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account under CPC section 116D without a court order. [f2]
For a tuition business, though, it may start as a monitoring flag, not a full investigation.
The bigger your classes grow, the more the pattern can look like something a bank wants to check. That is down to the number and variety of payments, not because anything is wrong.
Is it a bank hold or a real freeze?
Ask your bank whether this is an internal review or an actual freeze order from an enforcement authority. A flag like this may be no more than a routine check triggered by the pattern, not an accusation against you.
If it is a formal freeze, the bank should be able to tell you which authority issued it and give a reference number. That decides your next steps.
Documenting your tuition business
Your timetable and student list are your strongest evidence. Record each student’s name, a parent’s contact, the subject and level you teach, and the usual fee for that class.
Then match it against your bank statement: which transfer belongs to which student and month. A simple spreadsheet like this turns a confusing list of payments into a clear business record.
Receipts, or even informal payment confirmations sent to parents each month, add further support.
Checking if your account was formally flagged
You can check your account through PDRM’s Semak Mule portal to see whether it carries a formal mule account flag. [f3] A tuition account may not show a flag at all: a bank review is separate from the police list.
Getting money for rent and daily costs
For a formal freeze under AMLA section 44, section 44A lets you ask the agency in writing to release money for reasonable living and business costs. [f4] A more senior officer decides, with no court involved. For a tuition teacher, this can cover rent, travel to classes and materials for students.
If the police froze it under CPC section 116D instead, the application to release money goes to the Sessions Court.
Protecting your tuition income from now on
Once this is dealt with, open a separate account used only for tuition fees. Over time it builds a clean, steady history, so any future bank review is much quicker.
Tell parents in advance how you prefer to be paid, and keep tidy records from the start of each term. Both may make another flag less likely.
How long this takes
We cannot say how long a bank review will take. Records that are easy to check, such as a timetable, a student list and a fee list, help. A legal freeze has limits: an AMLA section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged, and a section 50 order or seizure lapses after 18 months if you are not charged. [f5]
How a lawyer helps clear this
A lawyer can ask your bank for the exact reason for the hold or flag, and send your class records and student list as one clear package. If there is a formal freeze, they can also apply to release money so your rent and teaching costs stay covered.
Clear records give the lawyer something concrete to show the bank. The bank or the authority makes the final decision.

Why would collecting tuition fees ever trigger a freeze?
Every month, a batch of small transfers arrives from many parents and students, sometimes within the same few days. To an automated system, that repeating pattern of different senders can look like a mule account collecting payments. [f1] The system sees the pattern of money, not the classes behind it.
Every transfer is a parent paying for real classes. Why does this look suspicious?
The bank's system does not see your classroom, only account numbers, amounts and timing. A genuine tuition business run through a personal account can trip the same alarms, especially as your student numbers grow. Explaining the pattern with records is how you ask the bank to clear it.
How do I prove this is legitimate tuition income?
Keep a student list with contact details, your class timetable, your fees, and the receipts or invoices you give parents. A simple spreadsheet matching each transfer to a student and a month makes a clear record.
Can I get money for rent and daily costs while this is sorted out?
For a formal freeze under AMLA section 44, section 44A lets you ask the agency in writing to release money for reasonable living and business costs. [f4] That can include rent and the normal costs of running your classes. A lawyer can prepare the application with your records attached.
Should I use a separate account for tuition fees from now on?
Yes, once the current problem is dealt with. An account used only for tuition fees builds a clean, steady history, so a future bank review may be quicker. Do not use it to move money out of the frozen account.
How long will this take to clear?
We cannot give you a time. A bank review can end once the bank is satisfied by your records: a timetable, a student list and a fee list. A legal freeze has limits: an AMLA section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged, and a section 50 order or seizure lapses after 18 months if you are not charged. [f5]
