The case is over. What now?

When a mule account case finally ends, the relief is real. But you may then worry that your credit is ruined for good because the police were involved.

That is not how it works. A police case and a credit report are two separate systems. One does not feed into the other on its own.

A police case is not a credit record

Your credit report shows how you borrow and repay: loans, cards and payment history. It does not show whether the police investigated you.

Malaysia has two main credit systems. CCRIS is kept by Bank Negara Malaysia, which supervises the banks and runs BNMLINK for enquiries and complaints. [f1] CTOS is a separate private credit agency.

Neither is a criminal record. A charge under a serious offence such as Penal Code section 424C, which carries up to 10 years in jail, is dealt with in court, not in your CCRIS file. [f4]

Where problems can still show up

A freeze can still hurt your credit report indirectly. This is the part to watch.

If your account was frozen and you could not pay a loan instalment or card bill on time, that late payment can be recorded. The record shows the late payment, not the freeze.

So the real question is not “Am I marked as a criminal?” It is “Did I miss any payments while my money was locked?”

How to check your report

Do not guess. Get your actual records and read them.

You can ask Bank Negara Malaysia for your own CCRIS report, and ask CTOS for your CTOS report. [f1] Reading both shows you what lenders can see.

You can also check the PDRM Semak Mule portal, where anyone can see if an account or phone number is still flagged as a mule. [f2] That is not a credit record, but it tells you if a banking flag remains.

How to fix a wrong entry

If you find an entry you believe is wrong, you do not have to accept it.

Start with the bank or lender that reported it, and send your dispute in writing. Keep copies of everything, with dates and names.

If the bank does not fix it, you can take the matter further. The Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS) handles disputes after a complaint to the bank has been made. [f3]

Rebuilding your record

Once you know what is recorded, you can plan.

If the problem is payments missed during the freeze, the best fix is a steady record of on-time payments from now on. Over time, that can count for more than an old slip you could not control.

If nothing negative is recorded, you can move on. Either way, act on what the report says, not on the worst you can imagine.

When to ask for help

If you do not understand an entry, or you think a flag linked to the case is still on your account, get advice before a big financial step such as a home loan.

A lawyer who handles mule account cases can check whether anything from the case still needs to be cleared, and help you deal with the bank.

Does a mule account case automatically ruin my credit score?

Not by itself. Your credit report records how you borrow and repay, not police investigations. But if the freeze made you miss a loan or card payment, that missed payment can show up. The only way to know is to check your actual report.

How do I check my report after the case ends?

Ask Bank Negara Malaysia for your own CCRIS report, and ask CTOS for your CTOS report. Read both together. If something looks wrong, note the exact entry, the date and the lender before you dispute it.

Can I get a wrong entry removed?

You can dispute an entry you believe is wrong. Start with the bank or lender that reported it, in writing, and keep copies. If the bank does not fix it, you can take it to the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS) after your bank complaint.

Should I wait for a clean report before applying for a loan?

Check first, because it depends on what is recorded. If the problem is payments missed during the freeze, months of on-time payments can help more than waiting. If nothing negative is recorded, there may be nothing to fix.
